Jose vs. Tj, who's the starter? The debate has been settled by Bryan Colangelo, the pro-active General Manager of the Toronto Raptors. Colangelo says part of his decision to part ways with Tj ford was that team was responding better when Jose was the leader, interview can be heard http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=PCR38EJ0KbM&feature=related.
When Jose was brought over from Europe by then general manager Rob Babcock, he played with the likes of Mike James, Eric Williams, and "Haffa"Arujao. Then 24 year old rookie from Spain, struggled mightly from shooting the basketball to communicating with his coach Sam Mitchell.
Jose's stats have steadily increased from 5.5 ppg and 4.5 apg in 23.2 mpg in his rookie season, to 8.7 ppg and 5.0 apg in 21 mpg, to 11.2 ppg and 8.3 in 30.3 mpg
Jose Calderon finished the 2007/2008 season with an incredible 5.38 assist per turnover ratio ranking him the #1 point guard in the league according to http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/statistics?stat=nbaassists&sort=astto&league=nba&avg=48.
Why couldn't Jose be an all-star?
Assuming he gets the largest chunk of playing time, which he will considering Will Solomon and Roko Ukic are rookies from Europe, Jose should average at least 36-40 mpg. Using basketbal reference his predicted stats conservatively would be 13.5 and 10. Knowing the arrival of Jermaine O'neal, Jose will have many more options. I would not be suprised to see a 15 and 11 Jose Calderon come All-Star break. Those are some all-star numbers.
Another factor in making the case would be the quality of point guards in the eastern confernce or lack there of. How many point guards can be listed as better than Calderon, how many proven point guards in the East can average 15 and 10 and lead their team?
A few possibililties include Andre Miller on the Sixers, Chauncey Billups on the Pistons, Gilbert Arenas on the Wizards (when he's healthy). That's about it, the rest of the field like Devin Harris play on bad teams or like Derrick Rose are rookies.
Jose will be a 2009 all-star. Book your flights to Phoenix.
